Fort Frances angler Bryan Gustafson missed out on cashing in at the FLW Everstart Southeast Series season-opening event on Lake Okeechobee in Florida over the weekend.
He wound up finishing in 71st place out of 163 anglers—just three spots back of earning $1,000 for his efforts.
After reeling in five bass weighing 10.09 pounds to sit in 37th place after Day 1 on Thursday, Gustafson only cold haul in four on Friday, which tipped the scales at 5.13 pounds.
That left Gustafson with a two-day total weight of 16.06 pounds, which knocked him out of the top 50 who fished on the final day of competition on Saturday.
Still, the 23-year-old was pleased with how he performed in his first-ever FLW event.
“It was awesome,” he enthused.
“I had a great time down there and I learned a lot,” Gustafson added.
“But I just didn’t learn how to adapt to some of the conditions that we were presented with during the weekend,” he reasoned.
The event title went to Brandon Medlock of Lake Placid, Fla., who caught a three-day total of 68.02 pounds.
