Fort Frances native Tirzah Keffer, who now lives in Thunder Bay to attend school, came up short in her quest to capture the Northern Ontario junior women’s provincial crown over the weekend in Sioux Lookout.
She ended up finishing in third place with a 5-2 record.
Keffer, joined by third Sheree Hinz, second Paige Rubenick, and lead Rachel Camlin, had a chance to force a tie-breaker if she could beat Kendra Lilly (Sudbury) on Saturday afternoon, but ended up falling 8-3 in nine ends.
Lilly, who went unbeaten in the seven-game round-robin, earned her third-straight provincial title with a 7-1 thrashing in eight ends over Karlee Jones (Port Arthur) in yesterday’s final.
The Sudbury rink now will represent Northern Ontario at the M&M Meet Shops Canadian Juniors, which take place Feb. 4-12 in Napanee, Ont.
Keffer got off to a 4-0 start thanks to wins Thursday over Danielle Ouellet (Longlac) and Chloe Gordon (Copper Cliff), then a pair of victories Friday over Megan Szajewski (Keewatin) and Robin Beaudry (Sudbury).
Keffer suffered her first setback with a 12-5 loss in eight ends to Jones on Friday night.
But she bounced right back Saturday morning with a 7-3 victory in nine ends over Kaitlyn Poirier (Sioux Lookout), which set the stage for her must-win final round-robin draw against Lilly that afternoon.
