The Borderland Community Orchestra’s annual Christmas concert, which was held last week at Donald Young School in Emo, was well-attended by people from across the district.
The orchestra played a variety of modern and classic Christmas tunes to a full house. The concert also featured Emma Dykstra reading a humorous version of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.”
Her presentation also included a slide show with DYS drama kids depicting the various characters.
The school also held a silent auction that offered baking and many home-made items created by staff and parents.
Former student and musical alumni, Alyssa VanDrunen, also donated a personal piece of artwork.
The concert brought in more than $1,000 for the DYS drama group’s upcoming production of “Aladdin,” as well as for other school projects.

This month’s men’s breakfast group will meet this Saturday (Dec. 17) at the Emo Legion.
The buffet meal, which costs $10, will start at 8 a.m., followed by the guest speaker Ken McGratten from Thunder Bay, whose topic for the morning will be “Men of Integrity.”
McGratten, who recently retired as a stationary engineer at AbitibiBowater, always has combined his commitment to serving God with his daily work.
His message, and excellent way of communicating with others, has given him many opportunities to share with his co-workers.
McGratten now would like share his thoughts with the men of Rainy River District. Come and be challenged by his message.

Off Lake Covenant Church will be showing the movie, “The Nativity Story,” on Christmas Eve starting at 6:30 p.m.

Local authors Elizabeth Adam (Klug) and Elaine Wilson both have books for sale this Christmas.
Adam, who wrote “Mother Love: Portraits of its Power” and “Great Expectation: An Inspirational Pregnancy,” has her books available at Cloverleaf, Emo Drugs, and elsewhere around the district.
Those purchasing one of Adam’s books at Emo Drugs between now and Christmas also will receive a bonus gift.
Meanwhile, Wilson’s book, “At Home on the Trapline,” about her family’s life in the bush, can be purchased for $15 at Quality Custom Sewing & Upholstery and Betty’s in Fort Frances, as well as the Emo Public Library, Cloverleaf, and Tompkins Hardware here in Emo.
