The Rainy River Community College Voyageurs women’s hockey team remains unbeaten in ACHA Division II play following a pair of 6-1 wins over the host Iowa State Cyclones over the weekend.
Freshman forward Thea-Marie Sauca led the way for the defending national champs in Saturday night’s game with two goals and an assist while teammate Janet Scherrer had a goal and an assist.
Courtney Laycock, Brittany Johnson, and Fort Frances product Kristen Penner also scored for the Voyageurs.
Then on Sunday morning, Penner was the offensive catalyst for the Voyageurs as the freshman netted a hat trick while also assisting on a goal by Sauca.
Emo’s Carlee Bosma and Johnson also tallied.
The Voyageurs now will enjoy an extended break before their next action, which is slated for Jan. 13-14 when the University of Alaska visits International Falls.
The first game of the weekend series will take place at 5 p.m. at the Kerry Park Arena, with the second one slated for 6 p.m. at Bronco Arena.
Saturday’s game also will be Brenley Anderson Night as the Voyageurs salute the Rainy River native’s accomplishment of winning the ACHA’s player-of-the-year award last season.
Anderson currently is in her first season with the University of Manitoba.
