Quick action by a neighbour prevented a fire at a local residence from causing more damage than it did, reported the Fort Frances Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters responded to a report of a house fire on the 1000 block of River Road West yesterday at approximately 4:45 p.m.
Firefighters arrived to find that a neighbour had noticed fire coming out of the east basement window, and used a fire extinguisher to put out any visible flames that he could see from the outside.
Firefighters went into the house with a hoseline to ensure the fire had not spread beyond the window area, and determined it had not.
Firefighters then ventilated the building, opening windows and using a positive pressure ventilation blower to push any smoke out of the three floors of the residence.
They remained on scene for a couple hours.
“The neighbour did an excellent job of extinguishing it, from what I could see from the outside window,” noted Capt. Kirk Armstrong.
He added the fire damage was contained to the window area, but the basement also suffered some heat and smoke damage.
The fire department was still determining the cause of the fire today.
In other fire department news, firefighters responded a fire alarm at the post office Wednesday evening.
The alarm had gone off after an individual accidently activated a pull station in the building.
