Several Remembrance Day services will be held across the district on Friday (Nov. 11) to honour our war dead.
Here in Devlin, a cenotaph service is slated for 2:30 p.m., followed by one in Emo at 3 p.m.
As always, Emo Legion Br. #99 is holding special events that day to underscore the importance of Remembrance Day, including a free-will luncheon at 1 p.m.
The Emo Legion then will host its annual Remembrance Day supper starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 each, which are available at the Legion.

Please take time to reflect on the importance of Remembrance Day because our lives would not be what they are without the many people who were involved in the wars of bygone days.

The October gas draw at Dev-Lynne’s was won by Ken McCormick, who received a $100 gift certificate.

From all reports, Sylvia Beadle’s 80th birthday party held Nov. 4 was well-attended and enjoyed by many.
The family continued to celebrate the following day (Nov. 5) with a shower for three Beadle babies, Jannesa, Gage, and Maddison, at the Devlin Hall.
Many well-wishers attended.

Cards played at the Devlin Hall on Nov. 1 resulted in the high going to Gerald Bullied and Adelia Guba, with the low being taken by Norbert Bragg and Lois Shine.
The next card games at the Devlin Hall are slated for next Tuesday (Nov. 15) starting at 7 p.m.
The cost is $5, which includes a light lunch.

There was lots of laughter and good times spent in the Cornell/Darby family over the weekend.
Garnet and Rebecka Cornell arrived home from Guelph on Friday, along with Laura Darby from Thunder Bay and Shannon Darby from Brandon.
Also adding to the dynamics were Pat Cornell’s niece and nephew, Holly and Earle, from southern Ontario.
A great weekend was enjoyed with Grandpa and Grandma Gordon and Jeanine, and parents, Bill and Deb and Kim and Pat. Several friends also got together to enjoy game night.
Everyone went home happier and healthier from time well spent.

Many of you may not know that Ernest Thompson Distributors in Fort Frances closed its doors on Friday (Nov. 4) after more than 60 years as a family-run business.
The business will continue to operate, with JN Webb and Sons Ltd. purchasing Thompson’s.
I would guess just about everyone in Rainy River District has entered the doors of Thompson’s at least once to purchase something.
Lois always had a welcoming smile right up to the final day. And we will never forget Ernie always had a smart remark (for me, anyway).
Our family always has had a special link with the Thompsons because my sister, Glenna, has worked for Ernie, Lois, and family for almost 25 years.
And whenever sadness, misfortune, or a celebration hit our family, they were always there with an abundance of food, often donations of money, and perhaps most importantly, caring and sharing.
I remember when my mom passed away very unexpectedly in 1989. Ernie and Lois were there sharing the pain. This continued with every other death our family has endured.
When I moved back 15 years ago from London, Ont., and was down and out so to speak, Ernie and Lois hired me to bake Christmas cookies and paid me well, along with extra in a card.
Their kindness goes on and on, with not only Glenna but, as I mentioned earlier, our entire family.
I spoke to Lois on the phone a few days before the business closed. I told her I would miss our talks on the phone that took place occasionally.
She replied, “Don’t get me crying already.”
I must admit I wiped a tear as I hung up.
I’d just like to end with enjoy your retirement, Lois. And to the rest of your family, congratulations on a job well done.
We will miss you!

I don’t want to brag or make anyone jealous or anything, but I can still fit into the earrings I wore back in high school.
