Eleven teams have signed up to participate in the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce’s “Great Canadian Chili Cook-Off and Cake Roulette,” with a few more still to be confirmed.
“I could take a couple more teams if there’s people still interested in coming out,” noted Chamber manager Anthony Mason, adding all teams must register by this Friday (Oct. 21).
Teams confirmed so far include Holmlund Financial, Gillons’, Boston Pizza, Seven Generations, Fort Frances High School, TD Canada Trust, Canada Safeway, the Canadian Mental Health Association, CIBC, B•93 FM, and Causeway Insurance.
The annual event is following a Hallowe’en theme this year.
“All of the teams are encouraged to dress up, so they’re excited about that,” said Mason.
“There’s one team that already has their costumes picked out and are ready to go.”
In other news, the date for the chili cook-off has been changed from Thursday, Oct. 27 to Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Mason said the event, which will run from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the local Legion, had to be changed due to a personal scheduling conflict.
As in past years, teams will be vying for either the “Best Chili Award” or “People’s Choice Award.”
Chili costs $5 a bowl or $7 for a sampler. Those who opt for the latter then can vote for their favourite concoction.
The team that gets the most votes will get the “People’s Choice Award.”
The Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre, a first-time participant in the annual cook-off, was crowned as the 2010 champs while CIBC won the “People’s Choice Award.”
As in past years, there also will be a cake roulette, where people put down their loonies for the chance to win cakes and other goodies.
Mason said anyone wanting to donate baked goods can bring them to the Legion on the morning of the cook-off.
The Chamber also will be accepting cash donations during the cook-off, as well as non-perishable food items, with both going to the local Salvation Army’s food bank.
