Six new fires were reported in the West Fire Region between Sunday and yesterday evening, the Ministry of Natural Resources said in a release.
As of this morning, there were 34 active fires in the region, with 24 of these listed as “being monitored.”
Nine of the fires are being managed in Quetico Provincial Park, providing ecological renewal benefits.
These are the only fires burning in the Fort Frances District.
Sioux Lookout District leads the way with 10 active fires while Red Lake District, Thunder Bay District, and Nipigon District each have five.
Fire managers are noting an increase in the number of people burning brush and grass during the day.
Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, such fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset and be out no later than two hours after sunrise.

If you live in an organized municipality, check with local fire officials for bylaws before burning.
Meanwhile, hunters again are asked to watch for firefighters as they respond to new fires, and people setting outdoor fires are reminded to follow safe burning guidelines.
