The Borderland Roller Derby League has been granted a one-time exemption from the town’s watering bylaw in order to hold a fundraiser car wash this Saturday (Aug. 27) at 300 Third St. W.
The league is hosting a charity bout to rise money for “Rachel’s Challenge” on Saturday, Sept. 3. Because it is a contact sporting event, they must have emergency medical technicians (EMTs) on hand.
In order to raise money to pay for the EMTs, the league is holding a car wash this Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m..
However, since the fundraiser coincides with an odd watering day at an even-numbered residence, they asked council to allow them to have the car wash without being fined.
Council agreed to make this exemption at its regular meeting Monday evening.
In related news, the Borderland Roller Derby League also asked the town to be a sponsor for its Sept. 3 bout against Thunder Bay.
But after reviewing the financial request, the Administration and Finance executive committee recommended council simply receive the request with no further action.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•authorized the purchase of a new handicapped transit bus from McNabb Transport for $74,901.90;
•approved the application for internship program funding for two early childhood educators for the extended day care programs at Robert Moore School and St. Michael’s School;
•approved Northwest Ontario’s Sunset Country Travel Association membership request in the amount of $1,891.25 plus taxes;
•approved the financing of the solar panel installations at the Public Works garage, Memorial Sports Centre, and Fort Frances Children’s Complex from the town’s reserve funds in the amount of $276,266, as well as approve a 10-year repayment schedule for the principal amount plus interest at a rate of 3.5 percent (the reserve fund repayment will be on a quarterly basis commencing on Dec. 31, 2011 in the amount of $8,300);
•approved a residential demolition grant application from R. Dakin in the amount of $500;
•approved a purchase card expense for Mayor Roy Avis in the amount of $37.03 (this is for a July 19 lunch meeting with Police Services Board chair John McTaggart and OPP Insp. John Kendrick); and
•passed a bylaw to approve an amendment to a development agreement with Steve William Both, Richard Morken, and 1578289 Ontario Ltd. re: development at 260 First St. E.
