Following up on a press release from the Ministry of Natural Resources published in yesterday’s Daily Bulletin, which asked residents to be aware of bears in the Fort Frances area, the Town of Fort Frances wanted to clarify that there has not been a big bear problem within town limits.
Planning and Development superintendent Rick Hallam said yesterday afternoon that the town’s animal control department only has received two reports of nuisance bears this entire year—one in July and one just last week.
This is not to be mistaken for the almost 30 conflicts with black bears the MNR has said people in the Fort Frances “area” have reported.
Hallam said it’s important to differentiate between in-town reports and those apparently being reported outside town limits.
“Fort Frances is a model community when it comes to black bears and ‘Bear Wise,’” he noted.
He said the MNR press release “makes it look like we’ve had 30 bear calls and we haven’t.”
