Dr. Jeff Denis, a recent Harvard graduate and now assistant professor of sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, will be in town to make a public presentation on local relations between natives and non-natives.
Set for Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Métis Hall, the presentation will include an overview of the major findings from Dr. Denis’ Ph.D. dissertation, “Canadian Apartheid: Boundaries and Bridges in Aboriginal-White Relations,” which was completed in May.
The 453-page dissertation, based on research conducted in Rainy River District from 2007-09, examines such issues as the sources of conflict and co-operation between local aboriginal and non-aboriginal communities, and the reasons why racism and prejudice persist even amidst many intergroup “bridges,” including friendships and intermarriages.
According to Dr. Denis, the purpose of the presentation is to give something back to local community members who contributed so much to his research.
At the same time, he’s seeking their feedback on his findings and interpretations as he prepares to convert the dissertation into a published book.
