The OPP bike rodeo will be held next Wednesday (Aug. 3) at 10:30 a.m. at the Emo tennis courts.
Youngsters are invited to bring along their bikes and show off their bike safety skills, with a free barbecue lunch being provided at noon by the Emo “Best Start” Hub.

The community garden in Emo is up and growing.
A project of the Emo-Chapple-La Vallee Healthy Communities Coalition, the garden is located on the western edge of Emo, across the highway from Norlund’s Chapel, on land generously provided by Richard Visser.
The coalition arranges for its planting and care, but the garden is meant to be a community affair. When the produce is ready, everyone is welcome to pick it and take it home.
The coalition also was delighted and grateful to have the Calvary Baptist Church youth group plant the garden this year.
Other community partners and volunteers who have helped out include Arnold Kaemingh, the Township of Chapple, the Emo research station and “Best Start” Hub, Dennis Mann, and Mike Williams.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, kale, beet greens, and baby beets are now ready while onions and potatoes should be ready soon.
A reminder that the coalition still is in need of help to weed, water, or hoe this summer. If you or your group has a few hours to spare, call Wilma Sletmoen, a health educator with the Northwestern Health Unit, at 482-2211.
Or feel free to simply drop by the garden any time to check out its progress and pull a few weeds.
You will be doing a service to your community while getting some fresh air and exercise.

Staff at the W.I.’s Pioneer Museum in Emo were very pleased with the turnout for their annual pie social last week.
All pies sold except for a couple. Meanwhile, raffles were won by Jonathan McCoy (vegetables) and Shirley Sheppard (cookbook and jam).
The staff would like to thank Kathy Leek and George Olsther for bringing out their cars, and to everyone who took the time to attend their annual fundraising event.
As visitors toured the buildings, they were very pleased with the “pioneer” settings.
Last week, museum staff concluded their summer programming for children with old-time games and a family picnic. They had another good turnout this year for the program.
One of the children’s favourite activities was making pioneer toys. Another exciting activity was cooking a meal and inviting their families to attend.
In other news, next Thursday and Friday (Aug. 4-5), museum staff will be holding a rummage sale from 9 a.m-3 p.m.
Donations are always welcome if anyone has anything to get rid of. Just drop it off at the museum or we may be able to arrange for a pick-up (482-3991).
The summer staff, Kennedy and Felicia, has been busy acquisitioning new artifacts and changing displays.
The museum staff invite the communities of the district to come out and see what they’re are all about.

There’s still room in the free workshop next week being hosted by Rainy River Resources.
“Mining Matters” is a program created by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). Participants will have a chance to learn about rocks, minerals, metals, exploration, and mining in a hands-on environment.
The workshop, which is scheduled for Aug. 3-5, will be held at the Fort Frances campus of Confederation College, and will include a visit to the company’s exploration site north of Barwick.

A reminder the Borderland Quarter Horse Association’s annual show will be held Aug. 5-7 at the Emo fairgrounds.
The show starts at 8 a.m. each day and will feature halter and showmanship, Western and English riding classes, Multiple Futurity/Stakes classes, and Two Walk/Trot Charity classes.
All proceeds will go to the “Community Chest” in Fort Frances.
