The 2011 District 1A Senior Games got underway at the Sister Kennedy Centre here this morning, with 101 participants from Dryden, Kenora, Stratton, and Fort Frances taking part.
“We were hoping for 100 participants and we got just over that,” noted co-chair Donna Law.
The competition started this morning with table shuffleboard.
Euchre was scheduled to take place this afternoon, followed by cribbage tonight.
Tomorrow will see floor shuffleboard and bridge taking place at Sister Kennedy while five-pin bowling goes at Plaza Lanes.
The three-day event then wraps up Thursday with darts at the local Legion, along with the table and floor shuffleboard finals.
“Our goal was to have at least six competitors in every event to make sure that we have enough to have the competition,” Law said.
“We did have to cancel a couple of events [golf, carpet bowling, and horseshoes] as a result of that, but for the most part they filled in fine,” she added.
The main goal for Law and fellow co-chair Nick Wihnan is to make sure all of the participants, who range in age from 55 to 103, have a good time over the next couple of days.
“Our goal is to make them feel young at heart,” Law enthused.
“A lot of them are quite excited as they are making a lot of new friends, and also catching up with friends that they haven’t seen in a while,” Law noted.
Event winners also will have the chance to participate in “Actifest,” which will take place next year in Brampton.
