Starting the fourth week of play in the Rainy River District Fastball League tied for third in the standings, Beef’s Warriors vaulted into first place in the 10-team loop following a pair of wins.
Kevin Gemmell blasted a pair of bombs, while Rob McGinnis hit his sixth homer of the season, to help the Warriors to an 8-5 victory over Barwick last night, leaving the first-year squad with a league-best 6-1 record.
In their first game of the week, Beef’s Warriors dumped Stratton (4-3) by a 9-2 score—thanks to another round-tripper from McGinnis.
Barwick, who won 7-2 over the Big Island Huskies (1-7) on Tuesday, now is tied for second with the Big Grassy Lightning at 6-2.
The Lightning fell out of top spot after a tightly-contested 5-4 loss to the two-time defending champion Sight & Sound Wolves (4-3) last night at VanJura here.
In other action last night, Rainy River (3-3) won 5-0 over Manitou (3-5), the Big Grassy Braves (4-3) routed Stratton 15-2, and Big Island earned its first win of the season in a 12-10 slugfest against Northwest Bay (0-8).
On Tuesday, Big Grassy Lightning throttled Manitou 11-2 while Sight & Sound doubled Northwest Bay 8-4.
The game between the Big Grassy Braves and Rainy River was postponed.
Meanwhile, a previously rained-out game from May 31 was made up Wednesday evening, which saw Manitou bomb Big Island 13-2.
League play resumes next Tuesday night (June 14), with the marquee match-up pitting Beef’s Warriors versus the Lightning.
Elsewhere, Sight & Sound is in Big Island, Barwick visits Rainy River, Stratton hosts Northwest Bay, and the Braves battle Manitou.
No league games are slated for next Thursday (June 16), which has been designated to play any make-up games.
Besides Tuesday’s postponed affair between Rainy River and the Braves, contests between Sight & Sound-Stratton and Beef’s Warriors-Rainy River, which were cancelled on May 31, have yet to be made up.
