The Northwest Community Legal Clinic is set to move to a new location later this month.
“The move is to be more visible, to be right on the main street, so that people will see us and be able to walk in,” executive director Trudy McCormick said of the local agency’s planned move from its current location on the second floor of the Northern Lights Credit Union to 206 Scott St.
“We find that when people come to see us, they’re usually with another service agency,” McCormick noted.
“Not a lot of people think to find us up here [at the Credit Union] on their own.”
McCormick stressed the Credit Union has been a great landlord and a good place to be.
“We just want to be a little more main street,” she reasoned.
The current office will close at noon on Tuesday, June 21, then re-open at its new location at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, June 27.
Renovations have been underway and will finish up shortly, McCormick noted.
“It’s fully accessible, which will be great for folks,” she added.
As well, the Legal Clinic changed the space to create a new meeting room at the front of the building, which it hopes to make available to other non-profit agencies in town to use if they need to.
For those who aren’t aware of what the Northwest Community Legal Clinic offers, McCormick said they provide services such as those for tenants, disability appeals, “Ontario Works” issues, criminal injuries, and compensation board applications.
“We offer legal information to anyone regardless of income,” she noting, adding they have available pamphlets and other information which is kept current.
The clinic also offers representation for qualifying clients based on an income means test.
It also helps clients by referring them to other agencies in town for further assistance, said McCormick, citing their partnership with the 2-1-1 phone information directory for the region.
