Staff
With fires continuing to burn in Alberta, the Ministry of Natural Resources was dispatching an additional 82 forest fire staff there today.
It will bring the total Ontario staff in that province to 191.
The Northwest Region is supplying half of the resources, with FireRanger crews being deployed from the districts of Fort Frances, Dryden, Kenora, Nipigon (Greenstone), Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Thunder Bay.
These FireRangers and an agency representative from the region will be joining resources from the Northeast Region.
Meanwhile, no new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday.
There remains two active fires in the region—one each in the districts of Red Lake and Thunder Bay.
The Crampton Incident Management team assigned to Thunder Bay District Fire #22 is reporting good progress on that blaze, which is classed as “being held” at 1,450 hectares.
The focus of the firefighting
effort is to work at least 61 metres in on the entire perimeter of the fire, and continuing to extinguish hot spots picked up during infrared scanning.
Meanwhile, Red Lake District Fire #4, which started May 24, also is responding to fire
suppression efforts.
The fire is smouldering in a chip pile, with crews using an excavator to pull apart the pile and douse it.
Located about 22 km southeast of the Town of Red Lake, the fire is classed as “being held” at 0.4 ha in size.
