Kenora residents soon will see the Town of Fort Frances flag flying at city hall when they look up.
Mayor Roy Avis said yesterday evening that he had made a bet with Kenora Mayor Dave Canfield that the Fort Frances Thunderhawks would eliminate the Kenora Thistles in the quarter-finals of the Allan Cup playoffs, which they did.
“What the bet was is that if Fort Frances beat Kenora in the Allan Cup playoffs, they would fly our flag for a week,” Mayor Avis explained.
“If Kenora beat Fort Frances, we’d fly their flag for a week,” he added.
The mayor congratulated the Thunderhawks for the win, and said he looks forward to presenting Mayor Canfield with the town flag when he sees him in Thunder Bay later this week.
Also last night, council deferred the presentation of the 2011 budget until its May 9 meeting.
While the budget was supposed to be publicly presented and then passed yesterday evening, Mayor Avis announced it would have to wait for two reasons.
“Because of the situation that arose in an in-camera session this evening, there’s a few questions to be asked,” he noted.
The second reason is Shaw Cable was experiencing some technical difficulties on-site, and only was able to broad audio—but not video—during last night’s meeting.
The budget includes a PowerPoint presentation explaining the town’s revenues and expenditures, debt and reserves, and tax ratios and rates.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•agreed to recommendations of the Administration and Finance executive committee to approve the adjustment of 2010 taxes for 704 Armit Ave., 1046 Cornwall Ave., and Plan SM 122 Lot 5 PCL Plan-1;
•agreed that a break-open ticket licence application from the Rainycrest Auxiliary, at 1561330 Ontario Ltd. o/a Xtra Cash from May 1-Oct. 31, will be processed in conformance to provincial regulations and rules;
•referred an application for Zoning By-Law Amendment 08/98-SS, re: Thunder Bay Truck Centre HOL–705 McIrvine Rd., to the municipal planner for processing;
•referred a request from the Métis Nation of Ontario, re: consultation with Métis communities on official plans, to the Planning and Development executive committee for its recommendation;
•agreed to a request from Fire Chief/CEMC Frank Sheppard to proclaim May 1-7 as “Emergency Preparedness Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•referred a financial request from District 1A Senior Games–Fort Frances committee, re: Senior Games in Fort Frances on June 21-23, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a financial request from Bruce Caldwell, re: 12th-annual “Fly-In, Drive-In BBQ” at the Fort Frances Airport on June 4, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a financial request from the Border Shrine Club, re: purchase of tickets for the Shrine Circus here May 17, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•agreed to a request from Salvation Army–Fort Frances Ministries to proclaim May as “The Salvation Army Red Shield Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•agreed to a request from Teachers of English as a Second Language Association of Ontario to proclaim Oct. 23-29 as “English as a Second Language Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•passed a bylaw to approve a service agreement with Ontario One Call Ltd.;
•passed a bylaw to authorize the entering into a collective agreement with the Fort Frances Professional Fire Fighters Association;
•passed a bylaw to authorize capping parameters for commercial, industrial, and multi-residential capped property classes, and to establish a minimum tax level for certain eligible properties; and
•passed a bylaw to approve an agreement with Lisa Pocock, doing business as North Air Services, for provision of “Dial-a-Ride” services here.
