My apologies

Frank Fraser

Dear editor:
I would like to extend my apologies to the two “young ladies” who were at our front door at 2 a.m. this past Saturday (April 9).
We were watching a movie, and dozing off on the couch, when I heard what I thought was something scratching at our front door. I looked out and saw, in disbelief, someone bent way over the railing of the front steps and that one of our (heavy) cement planters had been knocked over.
Now, after having our front yard vandalized in the past, my first thoughts were, “Oh no, someone’s at it again.”
Well, with my adrenalin pumping, I knocked loudly on the door, opened it, and went out onto the steps to find two “young ladies” doing something right under our living room window in and around one of our flower beds.
I didn’t really note who they were or really hear what they were saying—something about a “muskrat and a shoe?!”
All I remember is expressing quite loudly, and using some strong words, that I wanted them to “go away,” which they did.
After going back into the house to put on some warmer, more appropriate attire, I went to the front yard to put the cement planter back in place and, sure enough, there was a muskrat there! Imagine my surprise!
After he scurried off, the planter was back place, and the adrenalin surge had tapered off, I began to put things into perspective.
The two “young ladies” didn’t seem inebriated or intentionally causing a commotion, and had, in fact, seemed quite polite despite their likely excitement regarding their predicament with this little furry creature, who, I might add, seemed quite upset himself.
To make a long story just a little less long, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest apologies for my reaction.
My only defence, if you want to call it that, for my reaction is that we had been half asleep and suddenly were startled awake by the commotion just outside our door, the outline of a person laying over the stair railing, and a surge of adrenalin.
If you should happen by our neighborhood again sometime and see us outside, I would really like the opportunity to apologize to you both in person.
Sincerely,
Frank Fraser
