A pair of fundraisers are in the works to support the family of a young man who remains in the burn unit at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg following a weekend accident.
Mike Roach, 23, was at his family’s cabin near Mitaanjigamiing First Nation (formerly Stanjikoming) on Saturday when there was a fire and subsequent explosion that resulted in him being severely burned.
He was airlifted to Winnipeg, noted Peggy Loyie, one of many helping to organize the fundraisers for Roach’s family, which includes his parents, Pat and Kim Roach of Couchiching First Nation.
“We just want to come together and help the family out because it’s undetermined at this time how long they are going to have to be [in Winnipeg],” said Loyie.
“Their cabin’s gone and their son is in very serious condition,” she added.
The first fundraiser will be a bag lunch on Monday, May 3 at the Couchiching Multi-purpose Centre, which will include a burger, wild rice soup, pop, and dessert for $10.
People can start calling 274-1223 starting at 8:30 a.m. on Monday to place orders.
Loyie note they will be arranging free delivery for orders of five or more.
The second event will be a turkey dinner fundraiser scheduled for Friday, May 7 at 5 p.m. at the Couchiching Multi-purpose Centre.
