A pair of local curling rinks open play today at the club provincial championships in Thunder Bay.
Raymond Roy his rink of third Dave Broman, second Butch Wensley, and lead Patrick Briere will open the five-game round-robin tonight against Mike Rubenick of the host Port Arthur Curling Club.
Meanwhile, Kim Beaudry and her rink of third Kelly Wagar, second Teresa McFayden, and lead Jeannie Sheppard will play her first game of five tonight against Sharon Giertuga (Fort William Curling Club).
The top two teams in each division will advance to their respective finals Sunday morning.
The tournament champs will advance to the national showdown slated Nov. 23-28 in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
The Roy rink advanced to the provincials after posting a 4-1 round-robin record at the Region 1 playdowns in Sioux Lookout on March 26-28.
Roy clinched when John Cummine (Sioux Lookout) was upset by Greg Shields (Kenora) 6-4 in his final game.
Beaudry, meanwhile, went 3-0 that same weekend.
Beaudry eked out a 5-3 win over Kenora’s Crystal Wojtowicz, both 2-0 at the time, to capture the provincial berth.
