It was a winning Wednesday for Tim Nordin.
The Stratton Curling Club rink picked up its first wins at the provincial men’s playdowns in Sudbury yesterday to improve to 2-4 heading into their two draws today.
Nordin and his rink of third Mitch Seguin, second Mike Badiuk, and lead Travis Showalter battered Mike Assad (Fort William) 8-2 yesterday morning before edging Cobalt/Haileybury’s Robbie Gordon 6-5 in the afternoon.
Against Assad, Nordin scored a deuce in each of the first two ends to forge an early 4-0.
Assad fought back with singles in the fourth and fifth, but Nordin battled back with an angle-raise take-out for two in the sixth to jump ahead 6-2.
He stole two more in the seventh to finish off Assad.
Then in the afternoon draw, Nordin again jumped ahead early but allowed Gordon to rally.
Nordin started with a single in the first, with Gordon evening the score with a single of his own in the third.
Nordin then went ahead 4-1 with a three-ender in the fourth.
But Gordon slowly cut into the deficit, tallying one in the fifth before stealing singles in both the sixth and seventh ends to tie the game at 4-4.
After the team’s traded singles in the eighth and ninth, Nordin managed one in the 10th to earn his second win of the day.
The Stratton rink will look to continue its charge up the standings, facing Art Lappalainen (Port Arthur) in this afternoon’s draw and Alan Belec (Soo Curlers Association) tonight.
Round-robin action continues tomorrow before wrapping up Saturday, with the Page playoff system starting that night.
The winner will be declared Sunday, who advances to the Tim Hortons Brier on March 6-14 in Halifax as the Northern Ontario rep.
