Anniss Seid and Bryson Skirten headlined the local contingent at the Northwestern Open squash tournament in Thunder Bay over the weekend.
Seid won all four of his games en route to capturing the ‘B’ division title over Kristof Karpiuk of Thunder Bay.
The 16-year-old now must move up to the ‘A’ division.
Seid also will represent Northwestern Ontario in the U17 division at the 2010 Ontario Winter Games coming up in March in Muskoka.
Meanwhile, Skirten also brought home some gold for the holidays, blanking Thunder Bay’s Mark Hill 3-0 to claim the ‘D’ division title.
Angel McCormack also competed in the ‘D’ division, winning the consolation crown.
And Mary-Beth Tkachuk finished second in the ‘C’ division, losing to Thunder Bay’s Edward Kim 3-1 in the final.
In a battle of locals, Jason Kabel blanked Toby Munro 3-0 in the consolation final of the ‘A’ division.
Finally, Eric Bois earned bronze with a third-place finish in the Junior ‘A’ division.
In all, 18 players from Sunset Country Squash Club (seven adults and 11 juniors) competed at the tournament.
The juniors next will see tournament action when they travel to Winnipeg for the WSRC Junior Open on Jan. 8-10.
Coaches Bob and Mary-Beth Tkachuk wrote that the local juniors continue to make progress.
“Confidence and emotions play a huge role with junior development,” they said.
The Tkachuks also noted local players are invited to sign up for the annual men’s Boxing Day tournament on Dec. 26.
