With winter clearly upon us now, not to mention the season of giving, local shoppers are asked to think about donating new, store-bought mittens for children, or cash to buy ones, to the local “Mitts for Kids” campaign before the end of next week.
Organizer Melissa Gushulak said yesterday she will have to pick up the mitt donation box located at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce on Scott Street next Friday (Dec. 11), and then on Saturday (Dec. 12) will collect the two dozen cash collection boxes that were distributed to checkout counters at area businesses.
This is because the mittens—both those donated and those purchased by Gushulak with the donated cash—have to be turned over to the local Salvation Army for its Christmas hampers by Dec. 15.
Gushulak said it appears the campaign could be going better, but remains hopeful people will give to the cause in the next short while.
On the one hand, no mitts had been dropped off at the collection box at the Chamber office as of yesterday afternoon.
But on the other, businesses like McDonald’s Restaurant have agreed to donate to “Mitts for Kids” the proceeds from their own charity collection boxes in front of the cashiers there while Canadian Tire has agreed to donate Canadian Tire money towards the cause.
“I am hoping with those larger businesses that money will be coming in,” Gushulak remarked.
