Two junior players from the Fort Frances Badminton Club participated in the Winnipeg Under-14 Badminton Open at the Wildewood Club over the weekend.
Anika Alexander won her first match in the girls’ singles event against E. Gillespie (Wildewood Club) by scores of 21-9 and 21-10.
Her next opponent was S. Lam (Wildewood), who beat Alexander in a hard-fought, straight-set victory by scores 21-10 and 21-17.
Alexander then played C. Lobo (Identified Players Program) in the bronze-medal match and won in straight sets by scores of 21-16 and 21-6.
Meanwhile, Taylor Whitehead played his first boys’ singles event against top-seeded player B. Liew (Wildewood) and lost the match by scores of 21-6 and 21-10.
He dropped down to the consolation side, where he beat B. Hill (God’s Lake Narrows First Nation) in three sets (21-8, 17-21, and 21-14).
Whitehead then faced C. Forsyth (Kenora) in his next match and lost two closely-contested sets by identical scores of 21-18.
Whitehead also teamed up with Rylan Ramnarace (Ecole Provencher) in the boys’ doubles event.
Their first match was against top-ranked B. Liew (WC) and J. Salceda (IPP), who took the match in straight sets (21-5 and 21-8).
But Whitehead and Ramnarace rebounded in their first consolation match against C. Forsyth/A. Monteith (Kenora), narrowly winning in straight sets by scores of 21-19 and 22-20. The duo then met D. Liew/Z. Pelts (Wildewood) in the consolation final and had to settle for silver after losing the match 21-16 and 21-11.
Finally, the mixed doubles’ pair of Alexander and Whitehead played their first match against K. Chan/Z. Pelts (Wildewood) and lost both sets by scores of 21-11 and 21-8.
Their first consolation match was against A. Watt/B. Hill (God’s Lake Narrows), which went to the Fort Frances pair by scores of 21-7 and 21-12.
But in the consolation semi-finals, Alexander/Whitehead met their match with a straight-sets loss to C. Gillespie/P. Brown (Wildewood) 21-17 and 21-16.
The Fort Frances Badminton Club next will participate in the Winnipeg Winter Club Invitational on Nov. 12-15.
