The Muskie girls’ hockey team will host their annual tournament today through Sunday.
After opening play against St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora) at 2:15 p.m., the black-and-gold hit the ice again at 6:45 p.m. to face the Red Lake Rams.
Opening ceremonies will be held prior to tonight’s game.
The Muskies then have two games tomorrow, beginning at 11:15 a.m. against the Pembina Tigers before wrapping up play at 8:15 p.m. versus the Miller Aces.
Fort High is in Pool ‘A’ with the Aces and Rams.
The Kenora Broncos are in Pool ‘B’ with Pembina and the Sioux Lookout Warriors while Pool ‘C’ consists of the PCI Saints (Portage La Prairie), St. Thomas Aquinas, and Dryden Eagles.
The two teams with the best records after preliminary play will meet in the tournament final Sunday at 2 p.m.
The bronze-medal game goes first at 12:15 p.m.
In related news, the Muskies have benefitted from the recent addition of Michelle Veldhuisen, who has joined Rudy Anderson and Mel Langtry on the coaching staff.
She is the first female coach in the team’s history, and has nothing but good things to say about the program so far.
“There are a great group of girls on the team this year, and Mel, Rudy, [teacher rep] Sarah [Arpin], and I have been impressed with their attitude and effort both on and off the ice,” Veldhuisen enthused.
“I have also been really encouraged by the parents of the players,” she added.
“They are a family themselves in that they have a common goal, and that is for the Muskie program to be one that the community can be proud of, want to be part of, and support.”
