Rainy River District School Board students and staff raised $16,157.98 in support of cancer research during the week of the National Terry Fox School Run Day, which was held back on Sept. 25.
In addition to money raised through donations, schools held bake sales and contributed to the “Coins for Cancer” program in the week leading up to the school run/walk day.
School assemblies celebrated the legacy of Terry Fox and his “Marathon of Hope,” and some students heard an interesting presentation by a local cancer survivor.
“The board is thrilled by the work of staff, students, and communities in supporting this worthy cause,” said Superintendent of Education Heather Campbell.
“In addition to being a practical way to encourage physical activity, this event is a hands-on learning experience to teach children about citizenship and being caring, contributing members of society,” she added.
