A team from Fort Frances was included on the 2009-10 SIJHL schedule released this week.
League president Ron Whitehead said current Fort Frances Jr. Sabres’ owner Scott Kellaway is working out an arrangement to sell the team to a prospective ownership group.
Some reports suggest the group is based out of the United States.
“It’s the business of Scott to sell his property any way he sees fit,” Whitehead said. “There’s another group that has stepped forward so if [Kellaway’s] deal doesn’t go through, then this group would step up and start a new team in Fort Frances.”
The Spooner, Wis.-based Mustangs will also be part of the league’s 52-game schedule this season, raising the league to six teams including the Sioux Lookout Flyers, Dryden Ice Dogs, Fort William North Stars, and expansion K & A Wolverines.
“Spooner is playing a home-and-home series of four games, two there, two here, with each of our teams [for a total of 20 games],” Whitehead explained.
“They’re still in their own league down there, but these games will count towards our standings,” Whitehead added. “They are playing with us to figure out the costs and then next year will be making an application to become full-time members [of the SIJHL].”
