If you were born with a physical or developmental disability, the world of hockey was something you likely viewed as an outsider rather than as a participant.
Until now, that is.
Minnesota Special Hockey, a program originally developed in 2006 in the Twin Cities, is now looking to ice a team based in International Falls, with players from both sides of the border invited to join in on the fun.
Skaters as young as four and as old as 42 have participated in the program, and local organizer Sherry Veillieux said the hope is similar interest will be found here.
“I’ve only had two players commit so far,” Veillieux admitted. “I’ve had a few ‘maybes,’ [but] I think because nothing was set in stone that people didn’t want to commit.”
Veillieux said a summer camp to officially kick off the program’s inception locally is scheduled for July 27-31 from 9-11 a.m. at Bronco Arena over in the Falls—and she hopes attending the camp will alleviate any uncertainties those interested may have.
“We’re hoping to get 10 kids and grow it over the year,” Veillieux remarked.
Registration is $30 for players aged three and older.
Minnesota Special Hockey exists for the enrichment of athletes with a developmental disability.
