Sturgeon Creek School’s annual spring tea has been a successful event for so many years that few can remember exactly when it began.
This year’s tea and spring concert, which was held last Thursday (May 7), proved the tradition is still alive as family, friends, seniors, and other members of the community packed the school’s gym to enjoy some tea, coffee, and dainties and to be entertained by the students from JK-Grade 8.
Mr. Olson, principal of Sturgeon Creek, welcomed everyone to the spring tea.
“The teachers and students have worked hard to prepare for this afternoon’s concert. We hope you enjoy their performances,” he enthused.
Olson then went on to thank the hard-working parent volunteers who ran this year’s hot lunch program, as well as the dedicated members of the Sturgeon Creek School council, before turning the program over to the student emcees for the concert, Maria Vandenbrand and Nick Hay.
Mrs. Ogilvie’s JK/SK class started the afternoon’s program with their rhythm band’s version of “Alley Cat” and a song entitled “If All the Raindrops.”
The next performance was from Katelynn Jack, one of Krista Hart’s piano students, with her rendition of “The Rose.”
Taylor Croswell, Madison Williams, Janissa Judson, Tanner Neilson, and Mykenzie Borger, who also take lessons from Hart, played at various points throughout the afternoon.
Chelsea Barron and Janissa Judson then performed a poem, written by Barron, entitled “Spring.”
Mrs. Haw’s Grade 1 and 2 class caught the attention of everyone with three selections: “My Cat,” “My Sister is a Sissy,” and “Little Red Car.”
The Grade 3 class, led by Mrs. Veldhuisen, also entertained the audience with a poem about spring.
Mr. Cameron’s Grade 4/5 class then took to the stage with two poems entitled “A Sure Sign” and “Little Seeds,” as well as a song called “Sunny Day.”
The next group to perform was Mr. Tomson’s Grade 6/7 class. They created and presented a slide show and a dramatic reading of a book by Sarah L. Tomson, entitled “Imagine a Day.”
The Grade 3 recorder group, conducted by Mrs. Hay, continued the program by delighting the audience with three selections: “Long-Legged Sailor,” “Gently Sleep,” and “It’s Raining.”
The Grade 7/8 class, under the direction of Mrs. Tucker, then presented a dramatic reading of an adaptation of a book by Canadian author David Bouchard entitled “If You’re Not from the Prairies.”
Their version, entitled “If You’re Not from Sturgeon Creek,” was accompanied by a slide presentation of photographs that highlighted various aspects of life at the school.
The third-graders then returned to the stage with a song entitled “When You Dream.”
Mrs. Ogilvie’s SK class then presented a cool “rap” version of a story entitled “The Three Nanny Goats Gruff” from a music program, called “Music Play,” which is being used in several of the schools.
The afternoon concluded with the Sturgeon Creek School’s speech contest winner, Jessica Haw, who spoke about her “Oma” and how difficult it must have been to come to a new country.
Those on hand obviously enjoyed each and every performance, and rewarded the students with warm rounds applause throughout the program.
With spring weather just around the corner, Sturgeon Creek’s spring concert indeed was welcomed by all.
