The Kingston Voyageurs are off to the RBC Cup after a 4-1 win over the Fort William North Stars in the final of the Dudley-Hewitt Cup on Saturday night in Schreiber.
The North Stars held destiny in their own hands—needing a win over the host Diesels in their final round-robin game to land the all-important bye to the final.
Instead, their old SIJHL nemesis earned the win and then forced Fort William to the brink in Friday’s semi-final before the North Stars escaped with a 4-3 victory to reach the final against Kingston.
The stretch of five games in five nights seemed to catch up to the North Stars as they ran out of gas against a strong Voyageurs squad.
Kingston now will represent Ontario, considered the “Central” region, at the Canadian Junior ‘A’ hockey championship in Victoria, B.C. beginning May 2.
Meanwhile, the Portage Terriers blew a 3-1 series lead, including a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes in Sunday’s Game 7, to the Humboldt Broncos in the ANAVET Cup final.
The Broncos will move on to represent the West at the RBC Cup.
The host Victoria Grizzles and BCHL champion Vernon Vipers also will vie for the RBC Cup, with the Summerside Western Capitals punching their ticket as the East representative thanks to a 3-2 victory Sunday over the Dieppe Gagnon Commando.
