To the editor:
First of all, I would like to thank all the dedicated people who worked to raise funding for a new library in Fort Frances.
In every project, however, timing is important. And this is not the time for a new library here.
Look to our neighbours—Atikokan, Dryden, Kenora, and south of the border. People are losing their jobs and homes. Retired people are giving up their homes because of high taxes.
If we lose our tax base in Fort Frances because of the mill closure, other businesses and residents also will leave. This leaves the remaining residential home owners a very high tax bill.
The Town of Fort Frances cannot afford to spend a $1 million plus on a new library, not including maintenance.
This mayor and council should not even consider funding towards a new library at this time at any cost.
Please listen to the majority—they elected you.
