Students looking for summer jobs will benefit from an additional $31,964 in funding for the riding’s Canada Summer Jobs program, Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP John Rafferty announced today.
“This is positive news for our riding,” said Rafferty.
“In these tough economic times, it’s vital that good-paying summer jobs are available for students in their home communities,” he added.
An extra $20 million for the 2009 and 2010 summer jobs programs was included in the last federal budget, in recognition of the recession.
New Democrats also have asked the government to provide even more funding to deal with minimum wage increases in the province.
“We don’t want our already-overburdened non-profit organizations and municipalities struggling to make up the difference in pay for the students,” noted Rafferty.
The additional funding puts the Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding budget for Canada Summers Jobs 2009 at $247,736.
