The Rainy River District Municipal Association held its annual general meeting this past Saturday (Jan. 31) in Atikokan.
La Vallee Reeve Emily Watson, along with councillors Freeda Carmody and Ross Donaldson, were among the delegates attending the meeting, where many important issues were discussed.
In related news, Reeve Watson was re-elected president of the RRDMA for a third-consecutive year.

Congratulations to Sarah and Howard Teeple on the birth of their first child, Alex Howard, who arrived Sunday, Feb. 1 weighing 11 pounds, 10 oz.
Proud grandparents are Ron and Charlene McTavish and Bob and Ruth Teeple.

Congratulations also to Jason and Sheila Wiersema on the birth of their first child—a boy who also was born Sunday, Feb. 1 weighing nine pounds, 15 oz.

Cards played at the Devlin Hall last Tuesday (Jan. 27) saw Pat Busch and Jim Kellar take the high, with the low going to Lois Shine and Rudy Meyers.
The next card games will be played there next Tuesday (Feb. 10).

The first-annual “Shiver on the River” 5K run is being planned for Monday, Feb. 16 (Family Day) starting at 10 a.m. sharp in Rainy River.
The registration fee is $15, with lunch being served for a small fee afterwards at the rec centre.
A variety of other family events will take place there starting at noon.

The January gas draw at Dev-Lynne’s was won by Mark Rea.
Don’t forget to enter your name in the monthly draw each time you purchase $25 or more worth of gas there.

The Emo Legion’s 50/50 draw for January was won by Brody McDonald, who pocketed $455. Lucille McDonald sold him the winning ticket.
The next 50/50 draw will be held Feb. 20.

About 240 people attended the fish fry that was held Saturday (Jan. 31) at the Emo Legion.
The meal and evening was enjoyed by all!

A Valentine’s Day turkey dinner and dance benefit is being held for Dennis Gagnon on Sarturday, Feb. 14 at the Emo Legion.
The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., with the dance to follow featuring music by Lisa McPherson.
The cost is $10 for the dinner and dance, and $5 to attend the dance only (dance tickets will be sold at the door).
Free bus rides after the dance will be available from Emo to Fort Frances, donated by Ken Fisher and Nancy Allan.

It is with a heavy heart that I express sympathy to two families this week.
First, to the family and friends of Jo-Anna Granholm (nee Glueheisen), who passed away last Wednesday (Jan. 28). She will be sadly missed by all.
Our community is thinking of you at this difficult time.
Sympathy, as well, to the large family and many, many friends of Alan McCormick.
I had the privilege of having Alan as a brother-in-law for many years. Alan was truly a good man, down to earth, always the same with his friendly, easy-going manner.
He was always willing to take the time for a visit, or to help you out. If he had bad days, you never knew it because he never let it show.
Alan was the “best of the best” when it came to being a father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, partner, and friend.
He will be greatly missed, but leaves many memories in people’s hearts and souls—and assurance that he will never be forgotten.

Crossroads School here in Devlin is participating in a “Flurry of Fluency,” in which students will be competing in their house groups to read as many books as they can (students will receive a point for every book read).
Every student on the winning team will earn a McFlurry from McDonald’s.
Crossroads will try to break the record of 3,000 books read last year.

Two Devlin men were fishing on Lake Despair. They were being very quiet so as not to disturb the fish.
Finally, after an hour, Bob said to Joe, “I’m going to divorce my wife. She hasn’t spoken to me in two months!”
After a long silence, Joe said to Bob, “You’d better think about that. A wife like that is hard to find.”
