With February right around the corner, so too is the start-up of the next “In Search of Your Warrior” program.
Offered by the Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Services Inc.’s Counselling Unit from Feb. 2-27, its aim is to address men’s violence.
“We’re pretty excited about doing this again,” said Harold Tookenay, who facilitated the first “In Search of Your Warrior” program that ran back in the fall.
A handful of men have enrolled so far, but there’s still room for more.
Primarily targeted at First Nations’ men, the program hopes to give them the chance to examine the roots of violence in their own lives, and how it has affected who they are and their own actions.
Searching for their own “Warrior” is a metaphor that refers not to a military warrior, but the peaceful warrior—one who has inner strength, courage, love, and compassion, Tookenay explained.
It’s a step towards healing, and becoming a healthy, contributing member within the community.
“I guess it’s a reminder that all aspects of society need to look at the demons in their heart if there’s going to be peace in the world,” Tookenay said.
The sessions, which are strictly confidential, include morning reflections, discussions, conversations, lectures, and videos, with an emphasis on each man bringing his own experiences to the group to share and talk about.
