They did it again.
The local Taggs Source for Sports Bantam ‘AA’ hockey team won its fifth tournament of the season over the weekend in Kenora with a lopsided 6-0 win over the Seine River Snipers in the final.
Jordan Larson was the key sniper, netting a hat trick and two assists. Rugged defenceman Tarran Romyn flashed some skill with a pair of goals, with Colton Spicer adding the other one.
Taggs’ goalie Scott Parsons, with some key first-period saves, kept the Snipers’ offence from mounting any sort of comeback.
Taggs had opened pool play Friday with a 6-0 victory over the Southeast Jets. Larson, Nick Jourdain, and Jackson Coran led the way with a goal and assist each while Tyler Fontana and Nick Kaun added singles.
Parsons earned the shutout between the pipes.
Their second game was a lopsided 10-0 defeat over an undermanned Baudette Bears’ squad. Larson exploded for five goals in that one, with Cole Godbout, Romyn, Jason Goldamer, Judd Gardiman, and Spicer also tallying.
Brennan Carroll earned the shutout.
Saturday morning’s action saw Taggs square off against the Mcdonald Lightning, a key battle that ultimately would decide first place in their pool.
Even though both teams had big, physical players, the well-coached squads displayed discipline and skill, with Taggs defeating the Manitoban squad 5-2 in an exciting and fast-paced game.
Jeff Davis led the way with a pair of goals, with Jacob Hawley adding a goal and assist. Jon Carlson and Dylan Grinsell had singles.
Taggs then completed round-robin play with their first of two meetings against Seine River, beating them 7-3.
Larson continued his strong weekend with another hat trick and two assists while Spicer had a pair of goals and three assists.
Fontana pitched in with a goal and assist, with Grinsell notching two assists.
Defenceman Jon Carlson, now at the top of his game after recovering from a broken arm earlier in the season, netted the other goal for Taggs.
The tourney featured teams from Dryden, Baudette, and Selkirk, three Manitoba rural teams from the Eastman league, as well as the host Kenora Thistles.
Taggs expects to continue its strong play next month at a tournament in Detroit Lakes, Mn.
