It was nearly a clean sweep for the Muskie court teams in Dryden yesterday.
As expected, both boys’ basketball teams handled the Eagles relatively easily to improve their NorWOSSA records 4-0.
Garnet Cornell scored 19 points as part of a balanced attack as the seniors reeled off a convincing 77-47 victory. Travis Stromness added 18.
The Muskies now head on the road for a tournament in Winnipeg, opening against host Springfield Collegiate tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
The juniors, meanwhile, pulled out a 53-36 victory yesterday in Dryden to keep their unblemished record intact.
The biggest surprise of the day was the five-set victory by the Muskie junior girls’ volleyball squad over the previously unbeaten Eagles.
After splitting the first four sets by scores of 25-12, 22-25, 25-11, and 19-25, the Muskies won the fifth-and-deciding won by a narrow 18-16 margin to improve their NorWOSSA record to 3-1.
Head coach Jason Cain said he was proud of the effort level as his players came together at crunch time.
“It was an uphill battle throughout the [match], but the girls pulled it together in the fifth set and played some of their best volleyball yet this season,” he enthused.
The juniors hope to carry over that momentum into the “Winter Blast” tournament taking place this weekend in Kenora.
Unfortunately, the senior spikers couldn’t complete the Muskie road sweep, dropping a straight-sets decision to the Eagles by scores of 25-10, 25-8, and 25-10 to fall to 2-2 in league play.
The court teams resume NorWOSSA action this coming Tuesday (Jan. 13) when the Kenora Broncos ride into Fort High.
