The “In Search of Your Warrior” program offered by Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Services Inc., scheduled to start this past Monday, was delayed due to a lack of participants, facilitator Harold Tookenay said.
Originally aimed at a group of 10, Tookenay still has four empty spaces and was hoping to fill them prior to the new start date of Monday, Oct. 27.
“If I have six or eight guys who really want to do it, then I’ll do it,” he said Tuesday after only four had signed up.
The program is being offered to district men interested in exploring their acts of violence and understanding how violence shaped their lives.
“In Search of Your Warrior,” to be held Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. over six weeks, will address issues such as personal rage and anger, learning the triggers to guard against rage, and how to cope with that anger or rage in more appropriate and constructive ways.
At the same time, participants will have a role in determining the topics addressed throughout the free course.
“Quite often it’s nice to hear what they would like to deal with,” said Tookenay.
Though enrolment has grown from four to six in the last few days, Tookenay still would like to see more men involved. “I would like to take 10,” he remarked.
Interested participants need to be willing to commit and create trust with the facilitator and the other men involved, and for this reason Tookenay will not accept any more registrants past the first week.
At the same time, he’s willing to allow more district men to join the program after Monday’s first session. “They would still be eligible to join the group after Monday,” he assured.
Although the group is not at capacity, Tookenay nonetheless is emphatic about its importance to the community. “We’re still looking forward to this program,” he enthused.
