On Sunday, a man tried to drive into Canada around noon at the Rainy River border crossing.
Canada Border Services officers initiated an investigation concerning the man’s driving ability being impaired by alcohol. The OPP was called to assist and the man subsequently was taken to the Rainy River OPP detachment for breathalyzer tests.
A Sauk Centre, Mn. was charged with having a blood alcohol level over 80 mg. He was released on a $300 recognizance and given a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension.
Police escorted him back to the international bridge in Rainy River, where he subsequently walked back to the United States.
His court appearance is slated for Dec. 4 in Rainy River.
Meanwhile, officers from the Rainy River District OPP conducted R.I.D.E. programs over the course of the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Each day, officers could be found conducting stationary R.I.D.E. checks looking for drivers who had been drinking and then made the decision to get behind the wheel of their vehicles.
Over a four-day span, officers specifically dedicated 24 hours of the Thanksgiving long weekend conducting R.I.D.E. programs, with more than 730 vehicles being checked.
As a result, one driver was found to be driving while prohibited and another was issued a 12-hour driver’s licence suspension.
As well, 10 drivers and three passengers were charged with failing to wear their seatbelts.
Police urge motorists to not drink and drive.
