More ‘Bass Baby’ entries sought

Mothers wanting their babies to be the next local celebrity still have a chance to sign them up for the first-annual “Bass Baby Contest,” presented by Sigma Phi Alpha Upsilon in conjunction with the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship.
The entry deadline originally was yesterday (July 16), but that has been pushed ahead to tomorrow, a contest spokeswoman said.
“We would really like to see a full lineup of cute babies,” stressed organizer Michelle Cain, noting there still were openings available as of yesterday.
The first 20 entries will be accepted. Parents are encouraged to drop off a wallet-sized photo of their child at Betty’s by 4 p.m. tomorrow (July 18).
The entry fee is $3 and baby’s name and birth date must be included, along with the parents’ name and phone number.
The contest is open to Rainy River District babies age 24 months or younger as of July 26, 2008.
Beta Sigma Phi, which runs similar contests such as the “Sweetheart Baby Contest” and the “Li’l Pumpkin Contest,” feels the contests are unique yet significant fundraisers.
“Not only does it give parents a chance to show off their adorable children, but it also raises money for a good cause,” Cain said. “The proceeds from this event will go towards local children’s activities in the area.”
With February’s “Sweetheart Baby Contest” bringing in close to $2,000, Cain hopes the inaugural “Bass Baby Contest” will bring in a solid amount, as well.
“We thought that since the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship is so well-attended, it would be a great place and time to hold our fundraiser.
“People just love to check out all the cute babies,” she enthused.
The photos will be on display July 22-26 by the “Bobber Table” at the Sorting Gap Marina, where people can cast their votes.
The three babies who bring in the most dollars win prizes.
“But it’s not about winning or losing,” Cain stressed. “Every baby brings in money and every dollar counts.”
