There will be a new addition to the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship this year, with a beach volleyball tournament set to take place at the Sorting Gap Marina that weekend.
Truckloads of sand are being brought in specifically, but organizers need at least 10 teams of five players (mixed gender) signed up by July 18 to make the event a go.
“This is the first time putting it on and we’re hoping to turn it into an annual thing if participation is high,” said Scott Turvey, a director for the FFCBC.
“We lost the [Budweiser] Big Rig this year and it doesn’t sound like it’s coming back anytime soon, so we have a lot of [the] Sorting Gap that is empty and we’re trying to provide more entertainment options,” he added.
The tournament will run July 24-26, and will be right among the rest of the entertainment options available during the FFCBC.
The action on the Thursday and Friday will run from 5-9 p.m. while Saturday’s games will go from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The cost for each team to enter is $25, and every team is guaranteed three games. The winning squad will take home half the pot, so the more that enter, the bigger the prize.
Each team is required to have at least one member of each gender in the game at all times.
You can enter your team as a full five-person unit, or sign up individually for $5 and the committee will place you on teams.
“One of my mandates when I came to the committee was to make the tournament more Fort friendly and encourage people in town to take part,” noted Turvey.
“I moved here from Kenora a year-and-a-half ago and the sand pits in Kenora are always full of people playing, so it seemed like something that might catch on,” he reasoned.
