The Fort Frances Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) held a pancake social yesterday at their office on Scott Street in an effort to promote its youth employment services to the public.
“An event like this just basically is meant to call out to the community and increase awareness. I mean offering free food draws people in and gets people interested in the services that we offer here,” said Youth Services Officer Sarah Christie, who flipped pancakes at yesterday’s event.
The centre provides young people with various job postings, interview advice, resumé building and job search strategies.
“We facilitate summer employment for students so we offer an in office and online job board, we set up contacts in the community with employers,” said Christie.
Service Canada also gives information on health and safety in the workplace that people new to the workforce may not be aware of.
Christie also noted that casual work with home owners is another service they offer. Home owners can call in and if there are “odd jobs” that they need help with, students are sent out to complete them.
Some of the “odd jobs” that need to be filled include painting, gardening, moving, manual labour, yard work, cleaning and pet care.
Other services the SCCY offers include: help with job interview techniques (including practice interviews); volunteer experience opportunities; casual labour; and odd job opportunities; as well as information on wage rates, employment standards and labour laws.
In conjunction with employers, the SCCY offers a job-posting service which allows employers to find suitable candidates to fill their jobs. Wage rates, employment standards and labour laws are also available for employers to check and see if they are up-to-date.
Christie encourages youths that haven’t found a job or students looking for volunteer experience to come down to their office at 301 Scott Street (inside the post office) and access some of their services.
