Adult soccer set to start

With the emergence of summer comes the start of the Borderland Soccer Association’s men’s and women’s leagues, which kick off tonight (June 3) at the St. Francis Sportsfields.
“More people showed up on our actual registration day this year but when final numbers come in, we should be around the same as last season,” noted association president Timea Fleury.
Registration forms also were available online and at Taggs Source for Sports.
“We’ve had a few teams that are on the fence and aren’t sure if they’ll get the numbers they need to field a team,” Fleury admitted. “Once we know for sure, the full schedule will be posted and we’ll have a better idea of everything after that.”
The first action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. in the men’s division with Dominos facing last year’s first-place finisher, Emo, on the central pitch while Pharmasave takes on ITS on the south field.
Men’s league games will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings while the women will take their turn on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Playoffs begin in mid-August, with Fleury also saying the association once again will be hosting its “Borderland Ball Blast” tournament from Aug. 8-10, which attracts teams from Thunder Bay and the surrounding area.
“Last year was our first year running it and we learned a lot, so hopefully we get some more interest in it from out-of-town teams this year,” Fleury said.
“Both [the men’s and women’s] divisions have their own tournaments that weekend and it’s a good way to finish before the playoffs,” she added.
