New literacy co-ordinator announced

The Rainy River District School Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Diane Carlson to the position of literacy co-ordinator for kindergarten-Grade 8, effective in September.
The literacy co-ordinator provides professional resources to teachers, and plans, co-ordinates, and facilitates training sessions to support the successful implementation of literacy strategies within the schools with the goal of improving student achievement.
Carlson has 16 years of teaching experience, and has been involved in leadership initiatives at the school and board level.
For the past three years, she worked with staff members through her role as student achievement teacher at Donald Young School in Emo and has facilitated a professional learning community in the primary division.
Carlson also has been involved at the system level with the curriculum advisory, family literacy, and assessment plan committees.
Her training as a “Reading Recovery” teacher, followed by the completion of Reading Specialist, provided her with knowledge about the reading process, “best teaching practices,” and current assessment strategies.
“I’m really excited about this new challenge and it will be a wonderful learning experience,” said Carlson. “I look forward to meeting and working with teachers from across the district to improve student learning.”
Maureen Ricard, the current literacy program co-ordinator, will retire on June 30.
The board wishes her all the best in retirement and appreciates her years of dedication to student achievement.
