Reconstruction work at Central Avenue will commence this Friday (May 23), and the Town of Fort Frances is advising the public that a traffic control plan will be in place for the next few months to help resolve traffic flow issues.
“Once again, there will be some major road reconstruction projects taking place in town this year that will disrupt normal traffic patterns and create greater-than-normal congestion, particularly in the downtown core,” Mayor Roy Avis said yesterday.
“Town administration has taken steps to resolve traffic flow issues in order to lessen the inconveniences, as well as avoid potential accidents involving vehicles and heavy trucks,” he added.
“The health and safety of our residents and users of our streets and highways is of utmost importance,” the mayor stressed.
“The objective is to ensure a safe and positive experience for all those moving to and from Canada and the United States at our border crossing.”
< *c>Truck traffic
Beginning Friday, all heavy truck traffic travelling east and west through Fort Frances are being directed to use Second Street East.
Heavy trucks destined for the U.S. will be directed to use Second Street East and Mowat Avenue.
All AbitibiBowater mill-bound heavy trucks are being advised to follow the established route along Front Street.
Truck drivers are reminded that the use of “jake brakes” is prohibited within town limits and that speed limits will be strictly enforced.
It is anticipated that established heavy truck routing will be back to normal on Sept. 30.
< *c>Border traffic
Also beginning on Friday, the U.S. border traffic line will be re-routed onto Mowat Avenue. They will use the right-hand lane from Second Street East to Scott Street, then turn right onto Scott Street and turn left onto Central Avenue to the border.
During this period, absolutely no parking will be allowed on the west side of Mowat Avenue from Second Street East to Scott Street.
Heavy trucks will continue on Mowat Avenue, in the normal lane, to Church Street, then turn right on Church Street to the border crossing.
Town administration regrets any inconvenience this may cause the public and greatly appreciates their co-operation, patience, and continued support, said Mayor Avis.
