Mill probing effluent leak

AbitibiBowater is investigating an effluent leak near Fourth Street West and Central Avenue that was discovered yesterday.
While they have not yet located the leak, “everything is under control,” Environmental Services manager Gary Rogozinski said this morning.
“The mill was shut down anyway because we have a three-day maintenance outage,” he noted. “We stopped the flow right away. We had a flow down the road a little bit about 150 gallons a minute for about 20 minutes.
“It was basically just water as the mill is shut down,” he added.
Rogozinski said they do have a hole dug and are looking for the leak, but it’s not visible.
“We think it might be under the railroad tracks, but at this time we’re not positively certain,” he remarked. “So we’re putting in a camera to see where the damage may be.”
The Ministry of the Environment was contacted, as well as emergency vehicles from the town.
Rogozinski said he hopes they can find the leak as soon as possible and be up and running tomorrow.
