Girls’ soccer team earns pair of wins Boys’ squad ties, loses

The Muskie girls’ soccer team turned in a strong showing in Dryden on Wednesday, beating the Kenora Broncos 1-0 and then blanking the host Eagles 2-0.
Erin Kaemingh was the black-and-gold’s lone scorer in their game against Kenora while Lauren Pierce and Kelsey Quibell each hit the twine versus Dryden.
The boys, meanwhile, moved the ball well but had a difficult time beating the Kenora Broncos’ keeper after opening the scoring on a goal by Garnet Cornell (assisted by Jordan Davis).
Kenora came back and tied the score at 1-1, which is how the game ended.
In their second game Wednesday, the host Eagles scored early on a great individual effort, then again near the end of the first half because of a miscue by the Muskie keeper, to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Though the first half was sluggish on the Muskies’ part, the team was “really flying” in the second half, coach Shane Beckett noted.
Alas, Fort High could only manage one goal by Davis, who kicked the ball with his left foot and banked it in the net off the post.
His amazing effort sparked confidence in the Muskies, but they could not beat Dryden’s the keeper for the equalizer.
Though the Muskie boys failed to chalk up a win Wednesday in Dryden, they still demonstrated some exceptional skill.
Beckett described Davis as the “real workhorse” of the team while also noting rookies Cody Vangel, Brenden Cawston, Andrew Gobeil, and Annise Seid all had great games.
Both teams return to action here this coming Wednesday (May 14). The girls will meet Dryden at 9:30 a.m. and then square off against Kenora at 3:30 p.m.
The boys face Dryden at 11 a.m. and Kenora at 5 p.m.
Kenora will host this year’s NorWOSSA playoff, which is slated for Wednesday, May 28.
