‘Walk for Memories’ forms out

With the snow hopefully gone and milder temperatures upon us, people are looking for more and more reasons to get out of the house and get active.
Those looking to do so, raising funds for a good cause at the same time, have to look no further than the sixth-annual “Walk for Memories,” which is slated for May 24 in Rainy River and then May 25 here in Fort Frances.
Pledge forms for the local walk are available at Fort Frances General Supply, Super 8 Motel, The Place, and 364 Store, or by calling 1-800-682-0245.
A prize—a one-night stay at the Delta Winnipeg—will be given to the walker with the most pledges while all pledged registrants will get a free T-shirt.
Locally, registration will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Super 8 Motel, with participants then heading over to Fort Frances High School to walk around the track.
And to cool off, participants will be able to make their own ice cream sundaes afterwards, noted Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the Alzheimer Society of the Kenora-Rainy River District.
Open to everyone, participants are encouraged to collect pledges and then walk, run, bike, in-line skate, skateboard, or ride in their wheelchair or stroller.
If you have any questions about the “Walk for Memories,” or want to volunteer at the event, call the Alzheimer Society at 1-800-682-0245.
Last year’s walk here, which drew about 20 participants, raised more than $3,400 for the Alzheimer Society.
As for the Rainy River walk on May 24, interested individuals can pick up pledge forms at the Rainy River Record office.
Registration will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Rainy River Legion. Weather permitting, the walk will be around the community.
However, Schonewille is searching for an individual to co-ordinate the event after long-time co-ordinator Linda Johnston passed away last year.
Anyone interested in stepping up can call 1-800-682-0245.
