Innovation hub

Dear editor:
We read with great interest last week’s “From the Publisher’s Pen,” headlined Today’s libraries face challenges.
In its 2006 strategic plan, the Fort Frances Public Library board recognized the fact that libraries are changing, and we are striving to enhance traditional services with new technologies in order to help community members learn and adapt in a changing world.
Fort Frances Public Library patrons currently have remote access to library resources. They can renew library materials online, place holds, and check the library catalogue through the library’s website at http://library.fort-frances.com
The website also provides remote access to research databases through Knowledge Ontario by clicking on Electronic Database. There is a wide range of journals available through these databases, ranging from trusted medical references to Chilton’s car repair manuals.
One of the most exciting features planned for the new library is the technology centre, which will provide teleconferencing, web-conferencing, and video-conferencing technologies.
Plans are underway to link with the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre (NOIC) in Thunder Bay to make the Fort Frances Public Library and Technology Centre the Rainy River District hub for innovation.
We urge everyone to make use of the resources we already have, and to be part of the exciting discussions now underway as we investigate the opportunities for the future.
(Signed),
Joyce Cunningham
