Vous crowned league champs

The Fort Frances Men’s Basketball League wrapped up its season Monday night in surprising fashion when La Place Rendez-Vous were crowed as the champs.
After having won all but a single game this season, the Vianets lost the league final to the Vous by a 71-56 margin—though the game was closer than the final score might indicate.
“It was a really good game,” said Vic Davis, a league organizer. “It was really close up until the end.”
Ryan Anderson led the Vous’ attack, posting 16 points on the night. The Vianets were led by John Sivonen’s 27-point effort.
The loss was only the second the Vianets had suffered on the season. The first came back in early February when the Vous snapped an impressive winning streak with a 78-63 victory.
In the consolation final Monday, the Muskies edged Taggs 62-49. It was a balanced attack from the high school squad, who spread the ball and shared scoring duties.
Chris Legg finished with nine points for the victors while Taggs looked to Mario DeGazio, who dropped 27 points to lead all scorers.
“It’s been a good season,” said Davis. “We’ll be doing it again next year.”
Pick-up games usually begin in September until the league is officially formed and teams are created. The format has worked in the past, and Davis looks to continue in the same style for next season.
A handful of league players, including Sivonen, will join the Can-Am Hoopstars tomorrow night (April 17) when they take on the visiting Harlem Ambassadors in a fun exhibition contest at the Falls High School gym.
The game begins at 6 p.m., with advance tickets available at Betty’s, Northwoods Gallery & Gifts, and La Place Rendez-Vous.
