The 26th-annual Drew McKelvie Memorial mixed broomball tournament was held this past weekend at the Memorial Sports Centre to great success.
There were 14 teams in action—all trying to take home the unique trophy.
Entrants came from Atikokan, Dryden, Kenora, Thunder Bay, and Minneapolis. There also was one local team.
The tournament was won by a team from Minneapolis who went by the name “No Bull.”
They narrowly defeated Thunder Bay’s Frostbite by a 2-1 margin in a very spirited and well-played game that required an overtime period to decide the overall winner.
The five-time defending champions of the tournament, the Minnesota Gypsies, were unable to attend this year.
In ‘B’ division action, the Predators (Dryden) got the better of Anthony’s Automotive (Atikokan) by a 3-1 score. And the Best Western Hawks edged the Veterinary Rink Worms 2-1 in an all-Dryden ‘C’ final.
The entire playoff round featured very evenly-matched teams, with many of the games going to an overtime session to decide the winners.
The lone local entry—North Air Chill—narrowly lost all three of its games by scores of 2-0, 2-1, and 2-1 (OT).
With the high calibre of teams in the tourney, the Chill were very competitive but just couldn’t quite get the job done.
